Ark House is a non-profit organization operated entirely by volunteers. Since 1985 Ark House has provided low-cost temporary housing for thousands of people from out of town who needed, or whose loved ones needed, extended medical treatment at Dallas area hospitals.
Ark House began in 1985 as a project of the Ark Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church Richardson. The class rented and furnished an apartment to provide a safe haven for a family unable to return to their own home while specialized medical care was being provided at a Dallas hospital.
Since that time Ark House has grown to become an independent, nonprofit organization involving dozens of Dallas area volunteers. There are now twenty-one fully furnished one-bedroom apartments that volunteers manage and maintain. In addition, the Shepherd Program offers Ark House residents a local contact person who offers friendship and support throughout their stay.
